Wesley A. Putney House
Raleigh, NC
The Wesley A. Putney House (ca. 1905) is a two-story, front gabled Italianate dwelling formerly located in the East Raleigh – South Park National Historic District. To prevent its demolition, the condemned dwelling was moved approximately four blocks north to a site on East Street at the corner of East and Morson Streets in the Oakwood National Historic District. Mismatched doors, windows, mantles and moldings, as well as, hand hewn, band sawn and radial sawn floor joists indicate that the house was constructed on a limited budget with salvaged materials. The use of a multitude of salvaged and recycled materials alludes to the working class status of the original owner, Wesley A. Putney, the assistant pressman at the Raleigh Evening Times. The house is now home to RD Construction.
