Here’s a preview:

In Raleigh, North Carolina, an undistinguished corporate chain hotel was found to have, beneath a layer of stucco, the bones of a fossilized Sixties Travelodge — and after an archaeological-grade restoration and a modernist-inspired redesign it’s back in business, this time as the Longleaf Hotel.

It’s named, fittingly, for a classic-but-endangered emblem of North Carolina’s forests, and while its interiors are instantly familiar to anyone with an appreciation for mid-century modernism, every detail is carefully tailored to the place, from the longleaf needle wallpaper to the textiles by local maker Rise & Ramble. The most basic rooms are comfortable, if cozy, at 230 to 250 square feet, while others add a sitting room or, in the case of the suite, a full-size parlor with a queen sleeper sofa.

The Shepherds worked with Maurer Architecture, Greg Paul Builders and Bryan Costello Design to repair and add onto the Italianate-style building, which became a National Historic Landmark in 1978. It features restored 15-foot ceilings, original hardwood floors and grand common areas with a modern Victorian design.

“We tried to take cues from the existing architecture and sprinkle them throughout the newer moments of the house,” Jeff Shepherd said.

“It was a lot of fun and we’re really excited to see it all finally come together,” Sarah Shepherd added. “I hope that it feels right and people will appreciate that blend of old and new.”

The article mentions three out of five Maurer projects that have opened since 2015, or will open later this year. Raleigh follows Durham’s lead in the introduction of boutique hotels to the Triangle area. The Durham Hotel, also a Maurer Architecture project, played a part in inspiring this growth trend of boutique hotels, which is exemplified through its continued success.

Five years ago, Raleigh’s hotel scene was limited to chains, with standard Hiltons, Marriotts and Comfort Inns leaving little to the imaginations of visitors passing through. Since then boutique hotels, cherished for their charm and intimacy, their unique atmospheres and local vibes, began popping up all over the Triangle. The Bull City led the way with Unscripted Hotel, 21c Museum Hotel and The Durham Hotel. But Raleigh wasn’t far behind; in 2018, Guest House opened downtown, with many more to follow, including the recently opened Longleaf Hotel replacing a Days Inn that had, well, seen better days. Here’s a look at the boutique hotels Raleigh has now, and the ones that are on the way.
